Dev Hynes performs solo piano show at Les Poisson Rouge (Video)

Portraits of Dev Hynes

Just after the last post about Francis Starlight, it seems only right that I share someone else from Les Poisson Rouge. NYC was graced with a solo piano performance from Dev Hynes last Saturday, which luckily for us has had a couple tunes find their way onto the YouTube. Check out Blood Orange cover a track from his close friend Solange and a short pairing with Florence Welch doing that radio track from the Jersey Shore girls’ show. Lucky bastards that knew about this one and got to enjoy the greatness.

Francis And The Lights – Fell On Your Head (Cloud)

And The Lights

The level of anticipation for anything new from Francis Starlight is starting to become frustrating. Francis And The Lights provided the score for the indie flick Robot & Frank and included a tune for the closing credits that will be featured on their hopefully soon to be announced album. Last I heard from Francis, he was overseas working on new music, but the wait continues. Come back to Philly soon and blow more minds. Anyone know where to find a download of this track? Let me know.

Divine Fits on Kimmel (Video)

divine fits on kimmel

Divine Fits performed a couple tracks on Jimmy Kimmel Live during the week and I’m just getting around to giving them a watch. They blessed us with a track fronted by each of their singers. Surprisingly, neither was a track I would have expected, but that’s just fine. I don’t give some of the later tracks off A Thing Called Divine Fits enough play.

Wavves – Afraid Of Heights (Video)

wavves

For the title track off the new album, Wavves release one of the more disturbing videos I’ve seen in recent memory. Trannies doing what I can only assume is a Satanic murder of frontman Nathan Williams in a super low-budget five minute video. In celebration of the release of Afraid Of Heights today, they shared these new visuals. Definitely an odd choice.

Blood Orange x Phoenix – Entertainment Remix (Cloud, MP3)

Dev Hynes

Dev Hynes announced that he was a fan of the new Phoenix single a little while back and has done his own rework as Blood Orange for “Entertainment”. It gives the track a much more sultry vibe than the upbeat original had. I love anything Dev wants to share with us.

Fidlar-640x360

In preparation for the Wavves show in a couple weeks, I wanted to check out the opening act Fidlar. It definitely sounds like it will be worth getting to Johnny Brenda’s in time to catch these guys. Check out the track “Cheap Beer”. I fucks with this. Their April 9th show is sold out.

John Nolan solo show at The Barbary tonight is canceled – NJNews

John Nolan 2013

John Nolan was getting back on his grind doing a short solo tour, performing acoustic versions of songs from Taking Back Sunday, Straylight Run, and his short-lived run at a solo career. Unfortunately, the singer-songwriter was in a car accident and has canceled his show scheduled for tonight at The Barbary. Very disappointing news. I was looking forward to hearing some of those classic tunes and most likely a cover or two. Whether it would have been a Brand New track or a Bieber cover, he usually works some sort of surprise in there. Like this Elliott Smith gem, for your viewing pleasure. Hope everything is okay, John.

Wavves 2013

Wavves will be back in Philly at Johnny Brenda’s on April 9th, but between now and then, the new album Afraid Of Heights will be released. March 26th is the official date. If you haven’t already been enjoying “Demon To Lean On”, wake the fuck up. This song doesn’t suck, but these bad-ass kids in the music video do.

Atoms For Peace – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (Cloud, MP3)

thom yorke & atoms for peace

Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich hosted a mix on BBC Radio 1 that includes plenty of Yorke material but nothing from the duo’s new Atoms For Peace release. Regardless, worth a listen. It starts off with Thom and Johnny Greenwood’s track with Doom which I am a big fan of. If you have two hours to kill, check out the full thing. Likely, you’ll just skip around like I did. Great job on mixing though gentlemen. Full tracklist below…

Beach House – Wishes (MP3, Video)

WAREHEIM & BEACH HOUSE

I’ve never gotten much into Beach House, but when I saw that their latest video was directed by Eric Wareheim, I had to give it a look. The song is actually very enjoyable and the odd visuals are a nice pairing. Wareheim is always on some weird shit and I love that the Shrim dad stars.

Atoms For Peace – Ingenue (Video)

Thom Yorke

Three listens in, and Amok has already grown on me. “Ingenue” isn’t one of my top songs from the Thom Yorke and Flea collaboration Atoms For Peace, but I’m happy to see Thom has taken a break from filming epileptic fits for the visuals and went full choreograph Black Swan style in the official music video. Go buy the album.

Rewards covers Love & Rockets (Cloud, MP3)

REWARDS - aaron p. pfenning

I wasn’t necessarily a huge fan of the original, but “So Alive” is a late-80′s track that fits the sound & style that we’ve been saying Rewards was carrying on since New Jawn first started. I’m actually digging this remake of the Love And Rockets jam much more than the OG spin. Hopefully we’ll see more of Aaron P.’s project as Dev Hynes and Solange continue to buzz around the country.

Michael Jordan’s Top 50 plays – NJNews

In honor of MJ’s 50th Bday , here’s his 50 top plays.  Must be nice when you have a milestone birthday and sports media analysts still compare you to God.  I read the other day that MJ brought over a trillion dollars of business to Chicago and the NBA in the 90′s….that’s just sick.

Action Bronson – Strictly 4 My Jeeps (Cloud, MP3)

Action and Harry Fraud back at it with some super fly shit going on.  Harry twists some great old samples to make his product and Bronson is consistently on-point.  These two need to do a full mixtape jawn like AB just did with Al the Alchemist.  Harry is definitely making a name for himself with his production and who he sells to.  Forecasting a huge 2013 for both these guys.

WAVVES

The more I listen to Wavves, the bigger of a fan I become. This new track from his recently announced Afraid Of Heights album has a definite 90′s vibe to it. Looking forward to the new album and absolutely catching these guys the next time they make it to Philly.

NJ Throwback – LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends (MP3, Video)

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - JAMES MURPHY - ALL MY FRIENDS

I’m remaining hopeful that LCD Soundsystem aren’t really done with making music because when they do it right, they make some awesome tunes. James Murphy may or may not be working with Arcade Fire on their upcoming album, but what I’d really like is some new music from LCD. “All My Friends” is one of their best and remains a constant play on my end. Enjoy a throwback that never gets old.

Atoms For Peace – Judge Jury And Executioner (Stream)

Atoms for Peace

Atoms For Peace release their second single with “Judge Jury & Executioner”. The debut album must be coming soon and we can only hope that more sounds like this track. It still feels like Radiohead music, but so did Yorke’s solo release. Keeping an eye out for an MP3 version, but so far just this YouTube stream is floating around.

cONSEQUENCE

The Republic Of Wolves are releasing a second full length album this year. I’m sure it won’t live up to the expectation I created after first hearing their original EP. This still has the same type of vibe, but no way “Consequence” can stand up to the tunes off His Old Branches. Check it out.

Cloud Nothings in Paris (Video)

Posted in Indie, Video on November 24, 2012 by New Jawn

Cloud Nothings didn’t blow me away live, but solely because the frontman doesn’t sound quite as good as he does on record. Musically, they were spot on. Check out this pretty cool performance released by Converse of the band playing the track “Stay Useless” on a graffiti-covered bus in the streets of Paris. Something different.

DJ Baby Eagle – Booty Bassix Vol. 2 (Cloud, MP3)

Posted in Hip Hop, Indie, MP3, Philly, Stream with tags , on November 17, 2012 by New Jawn

About a month back some beer-slingers from Broad Street Bullies Pub went deep into the heart of Fishtown and discovered a new talent emerging from the North Side of Philadelphia.  DJ Baby Eagle aka Baby E aka Dae Dae was laying some shit down for 50 drunk hipsters and hot damn they were enjoying themselves.  His shit is Crunk OG Funk derived from the classics (peep samples).  We got to thinking that this kid would murder the dance floor @BulliesPub and the bachelorettes will soon be swooning.  Baby Eagle would “spike the punch” in this corporate powerhouse we call Xfinity Live!  #twerk # babybear #babyeagle.
