Made In America 2013 lineup

Fuck yes. Just when you thought it was going to be necessary to travel to Chi-town to catch Nine Inch Nails and Queens Of The Stone Age at Lollapalooza this summer, Made In America come out of nowhere with a sick lineup of diverse proportions. Sure. Jay-Z isn’t listed as performing, but I’ll guarantee he makes an appearance during the Beyonce headlining performance. Plenty of dance parties with Calvin Harris, deadmau5, Wolfgang, and Nero. The hip hop scene will be all you could ask for as well with Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Wiz, and 2 Chainz. Throw in Empire Of The Sun and you have the must see summer festival Philly has been blessed with for 2013. Tickets officially on sale next Wednesday.

Radio 104.5 announces 2013 Summer Block Party series – NJNews

Cold-War-Kids-3

Radio 104.5 announced their annual Summer Block Party series that takes place down at The Piazza in Norther Liberties each year. These free shows usually bring out a whole gang of people who have no idea who the bands playing are but want to enjoy some new music and outdoor drinking. More so the outdoor drinking. I’ll definitely want to be in attendance for the July 13th show that includes Cold War Kids and Bad Books. I’m surprised they wouldn’t space those two bands out considering they are the only real recognizable names other than Metric. More info to come for the final two dates. I hope this is something that continues for years to come. Hit the Read More section for the full schedule.

Action Bronson in Philly today – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Hip Hop, Interviews, Local Events, Philly on September 29, 2012 by New Jawn

Sneaker Pimps thought it was the right choice to tap Action Bronson for their current tour. Considering the dude wears Keds usually, not sure how he was the perfect fit, but regardless, he’s gonna kill it tonight at Starlight Ballroom. Lame that SoundGarden Hall is already being shut down. Sounded like a good time. Come out to UBIQ on Walnut Street today to meet Bronsalini along with the other performers tonight, Joey Badass and Flatbush Zombies. I would love to hear some of the ridiculous shit Bronson is going to say to fans.

The Dark Knight Rises IMAX presale begins – NJNews

Posted in Advertising, Comics, Local Events, Movies, Trailers on June 11, 2012 by New Jawn

I more so wanted to post this because of the dope ad/poster used for The Dark Knight Rises presale for the midnight showing at the Tuttleman IMAX at the Franklin Institute. That theater is rough on the neck, but if it’s the only place local showing TDKR in IMAX, I’ll suffer thru it. Hopefully I can make a trip to Cherry Hill or K.O.P. with the other superfans though. Presale tickets are on sale now for the July 20th showing at midnight. I’m sure it will sell out, but not sure if it will 5-6 weeks in advance.

Made In America announces Phase One (Update)

Posted in Concerts, Electronic, Hip Hop, Local Events, Philly, Rock & Roll, Updates with tags on May 21, 2012 by New Jawn

With tickets going on sale in less than 48 hours, the first leak of performers for the Jay-Z currated festival coming to Philadelphia were announced this morning. Made In America is taking place Labor Day weekend in Fairmount Park. The announced performers to be added to the headlining Hov are Pearl Jam, Odd Future, Skrillex, Santigold, Miike Snow, D’Angelo, and Afrojack. He’s definitely keeping it diverse, as promised. Hopefully the rest of the 28 performers are announced before tickets go on sale, but either way, this is well worth $99.

UPDATE: Additional acts for what is being called “Phase One” of the Made In America music festival came out later today. The highlight being Maybach Music Group, featuring Rick Ross, Meek Mill, and Wale. Also to perform: The Dirty Projectors, Calvin Harris, Passion Pit, Rita Ora, X, Janelle Monae, Prince Royal, The Knocks, and a DJ set from Savoy. I am expecting at least a few more big names. Kanye, Beyonce, or Coldplay wouldn’t be much of a surprise considering Jay is supposedly “hand-picking” the lineup. We’ll see. Does “Phase One” mean “Day One”? I doubt it.

The 5th Annual Roots Picnic lineup announced – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Electronic, Hip Hop, Indie, Local Events, Philly on March 14, 2012 by New Jawn

The Legendary Roots Crew have decided to make the 2012 picnic even bigger than the past four years. This time around, it’s a two day event taking place on June 2nd & 3rd down at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. I have to assume more acts will be announced, specifically for Sunday. So far though, here’s what’s in store.

Saturday, June 2nd: The Roots, De La Soul, James Murphy (DJ Set), Wale, St. Vincent, Tune-Yards, Flosstradamus, The Hood Internet, OCD, Moosh & Twist, Danny Brown, Kids These Days, and Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire

Sunday, June 3rd: Kid Cudi, Major Lazer, and Chill Moody

Clearly, more acts are needed for Sunday. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Roots do a full set both dates. I wish The Hood Internet and James Murphy were on Sunday so I could just buy a ticket for day two. Kid Cudi and Major Lazer is enough to count me in though. I’m sure Murphy’s DJ set will have some LCD Soundsystem, but I’d like to hear what else their frontman gets down with. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 12 noon. Not sure of the price for 2-Day passes, but single day tickets are priced at $50 according to Ticketmaster. Plus rape fees of course.

Heineken Green Room is holding another event in Philly on Tuesday, February 28th. This time is Detroit MC Black Milk, along with a few guests, at Silk City. The last HGR at Silk City was DJ Drama and after the green bottles stopped, white wine was getting spilled all over the dancefloor. The event is obviously 21 and over. If interested in attending, shoot an email over to these guys with the subject Contest Submission | Black Milk and your full name in the body of the email. Winners will be notified via email and are allowed a guest. New Jawn plans to be in the building once again.

Local restaurant ELA offering some “Brand New” cocktails – NJNews

Posted in Local Events, Philly on January 9, 2012 by New Jawn

Looks like I’ve found my next choice for where to go for dinner. ELA, located at 3rd & Bainbridge, is a new American bar and restaurant that has a pretty delicious sounding menu. What really has me interested in checking out ELA is their cocktail list. Each of the signature cocktails are named after song titles from the band Brand New. They stayed away from the obvious “Soco Amaretto Lime” and went with titles like “Last Chance To Lose Your Keys” and “Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis”. They all sound like a pain in the ass for the barkeep to make, but you can bet your ass I’m trying these when I visit ELA in the near future. Word is if you mention hearing about the Brand New drink list hype, the owner is offering a free drink with your dinner. Sweet deal.

Today is Record Store Day – NJNews

Posted in Alternative, Indie, Local Events, Music News, Rock & Roll on November 25, 2011 by New Jawn

Today being the biggest shopping day in America, you might want to check out some of the limited releases from some of your favorite artists for another Record Store Day. Black Friday following a day where we’re supposed to be thankful for what we have in a non-materialistic way is ironic and the fact that now many stores are opening as early as 10PM on Thanksgiving, rather than waiting for Friday, makes me cringe. However, I do love the smell of commerce in the morning. Check out the full list here. I want the Nirvana jawn.

  • Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Part Two Deluxe Edition (5000 copies)
  • The Black Keys – “Lonely Boy” 12″ vinyl
  • Dr. Dog – “Warrior Man” 7″ single
  • Iron & Wine – Morning Becomes Eclectic 12″ vinyl (3000 copies)
  • Kings Of Leon – The Early Vinyl, 4LP set (3250 copies domestic)
  • Nirvana – Nevermind: The Singles, 10″ vinyl set (5000 copies)
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magic 12″ double LP (5000 copies)

Anthony Jeselnik playing 4 nights in Philly – NJNews

Posted in Comedy, Local Events, Philly on November 15, 2011 by New Jawn

Quite possibly the most evil joke-man in comedy, Anthony Jeselnik has made the last couple Comedy Central Roasts worth saving on the DVR. Sure he’s a little goofy looking and his delivery is extremely slow and dry, but the shit he says is down right hilarious. He’s the type of guy that can use subjects like pedophilia and rape to have an entire room laughing. Therefore, needless to say, he’s one of my favorite up-and-coming comedians. Jeselnik has a four night stint planned for Helium Night Club in late December, ending with a special New Year’s Eve show. Tickets are on sale now. Wednesday’s show is only $10. Who’s with me?

The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence (Trailer)

Posted in Local Events, Movies, Trailers on September 9, 2011 by New Jawn

The sequel for The Human Centipede will be out soon and the official teaser was released yesterday. The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence should be just as sick as the original. If you haven’t caught the first one, I’m not sure if it’s required viewing for the second since the premise is completely different. Part 2 is about a fan of the film who decides to medically complete the same procedure as the sick as fuck Dr. Heiter. Writer/director Tom Six has one twisted mind to come up with the concept behind The Human Centipede. In the words of a semi-wise man, “Anything that a whole country is banning, I’m in”. Thought England wasn’t uptight? The Ritz Bourse will have a two night run of Full Sequence the weekend of October 7th. Not sure if they’ll sell tickets in advance, but I’m sure it’ll be a packed house.

Mad Decent Block Party date & location changed – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Electronic, Hip Hop, Local Events, Philly, Updates on July 28, 2011 by New Jawn

While @Albusy is off running a muck on the Mexicano’s and making sure todo bien, August in Philly should be a scorcher with plenty to do outdoors. The good people at Mad Decent are continuing their summer Block Party festivites, hitting four major cities: Philly, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The Philly party is being held at the Starlight Ballroom this year with free admission. The site recommends registering as an attendee to guarentee entry. Performers for the Philadelphia show include the H.N.I.C. of Mad Decent, Diplo, along with Das Racist, PO PO, DJ Sega, Brick Bandits, Paul Devro, Kito and Luvstep. L.A. gets Major Lazer, which would have been a great addition to the Philly lineup, but it’s free so don’t complain. Sweaty hipsters mark your calendars for August 6th.

UPDATE: In some wack news, the Philly Mad Decent Block Party has been switched to Sunday, August 7th. Who came up with that genius idea? Looks like I’ll miss this year’s event. Fuck a Sunday. Also, on a positive note, the event has been moved to the Piazza down in Northern Liberties. That is a much better space to pack heads into. Take the good with the bad, I guess.

?uestlove’s 4th of July Weekend in Philly – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Hip Hop, Local Events, Philly, R&B/Soul on June 23, 2011 by New Jawn

?uestlove and his Roots Crew are making Philly the place to be for this 4th of July holiday weekend. It was announced a couple months ago that The Roots would reprise their place at the Art Museum’s annual concert held on Independence Day, along with a couple of throwback performances by Earth, Wind, & Fire and Michael McDonald. Additional performers were announced with Estelle and DJ Jazzy Jeff added to the main stage and an alternate stage with some small acts likely hand picked by ?uest. Furthermore, there will be a whole gang of pre-parties going down on the 3rd to get people hype for the holiday. Check out the flyer below that lists everything to expect. The highlight is definitely the DJ sets by Diplo, Jazzy Jeff, ?uest, and J Rocc at Voyeur Nightclub. Expect to see a bunch of juiced up, sweaty bartenders swinging their shirts in the air. Voyeur gets real seedy-like.

The Shins to headline POPPED! Music Festival at FDR Park – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Hip Hop, Indie, Local Events, Philly, Updates on June 20, 2011 by New Jawn

Whaaaaaat!?!? Philly is having an indie rock music festival in September down at The Lakes, or FDR Park if you so please, on September 23rd & 24th. The festival will be headlined by The Shins, who we have not heard much out of since 2007′s Wincing The Night Away other than frontman James Mercer’s side-project Broken Bells. The POPPED! Music Festival, according to their site, will include three stages with music, DJ sets, and comedy performances. Other acts already confirmed for the weekend include Cults, Panda Bear, Girl Talk, the Hold Steady, and Rakim. More info to come, so keep an eye on the official site for when tickets go on sale.

UPDATE: As if The Shins weren’t enough, POPPED! has announced some additional acts that will move tickets quickly. Cage The Elephant will join The Shins on Friday, September 23rd. Additional performers announced include The Roots frontman Black Thought, Foster The People, Company Of Thieves, and Titus Andornicus. Exciting shit.

Wu-Tang art exhibit in Boston – NJNews

Posted in Art, Hip Hop, Local Events on June 16, 2011 by New Jawn

While NJ hates on Boston sports squads, this weekend would be an exception to go visit Beantown. Acoma Gallery is hosting an exhibit with all pieces inspired by one of the most legendary hip hop groups of all time, the Wu-Tang Clan. The owner of the gallery, Alvin Acoma Colon, was apparently a huge fan of the Wu as a teenager when he was into the graffiti scene and this is his way of paying homage. I wonder if any of the Wu will be in attendance. More info on the official gallary site and a quick preview below of one of the pieces that will be on display, “CherChez La Chepe” by Mark Quintanilla.

Young Chris performing at Philly Apple store tonight

Posted in Concerts, Hip Hop, Local Events, Philly, Video on June 10, 2011 by New Jawn

Young Chris is doing a free show at the Apple store on Walnut Street for Black Music Month. Wristbands are required and they started giving them out yesterday for tonight’s 8:30PM performance. Chris is dropping that L.I.F.E. mixtape soon, so who knows what songs he’ll perform tonight. The Apple Black Music Month concert series is hitting most major cities. NYC will have visits from Jadakiss and Saigon. D.C. gets Tabi Bonney, obviously because he’s from D.C. The San Fran store will have a performance from Pharoahe Monch and Twista does it big in Chicago. Well put together Apple. Be sure to get out there and support a local favorite, Young Chris, tonight. I wouldn’t be surprised if Team Early is in the building.

3rd Annual International Beer Expo hits Philly today

Posted in Local Events, Philly on June 4, 2011 by New Jawn

The 3rd Annual International Beer Expo takes place today at the Navy Yard down in South Philly. Tickets were $45 in advance, not sure if they sold out or will be available at the door. The event brings out 50+ international breweries with over 100 beers to try. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, or evening. The day session runs 1230pm – 4pm, night is 530pm – 9pm. The full list of breweries can viewed here. Bring your A game today kids. Expect a drunken New Jawn writer on the loose. Might even make it to the Picnic for the good part since I’m a day session ticket holder.

Philly to get two new concert venues – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Local Events, Philly on June 2, 2011 by New Jawn

If all goes as planned, Philadelphia will have two new venues for local and visiting musicians to perform, one being a Philly version of the increasingly popular House of Blues. If City Council rules that the new venue will not negatively impact the surrounding residential area, House of Blues’ Philly location will be on the waterfront near the Sugar House casino and hold approximately 3,000 attendees. Not ideal for a public transportation accessible site, but will still be a big draw because of the talent it can pull in. The second possible new venue would be a venture by Bowery Presents, that oversees the Bowery Ballroom and Webster Hall venues in New York City. This would be located on 10th & Spring Garden, where the old Spaghetti Warehouse was located. This would be much smaller and a club type atmosphere, holding 800, making it more comparable to the TLA and Trocadero. How bad will this effect the existing venues in the area? That remains to be seen, as does the final legal issues of getting these projects up and running. If anyone is effected I hope it’s the Troc. That place blows donkey dick anyway. Bowery’s site hopes to open by Fall 2011 and House of Blues is still in the early planning stages.

IN THEATERS: Hobo With A Shotgun

Posted in Local Events, Movies on May 20, 2011 by New Jawn

Hobo With A Shotgun was originally conceived during the contest for creating fake trailers when Grindhouse was released. Grindhouse was the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez homeage to 1970′s horror and exploitation films, including a double feature with Planet Terror (Rodriguez) and Deathproof (Tarantino). Hobo With A Shotgun is the second of the fake trailers that played between the two films to be made into a full length feature, along with 2010′s Machete. From the film’s trailer, it’s going to be sick and full of blood. I bet some people get shot in the face too. It’s the story of a homelss man who sets out on a mission of some vigilante justice. Sounds rad. This is the writing and directing teams first full length and with the buzz around it and limited release in major cities, I am sure they will get their next project funded handsomely. Hobo With A Shotgun starts today at the Ritz Bourse for one week only. Don’t sleep.

Cinco de Mayo time

Posted in Local Events, World News on May 5, 2011 by New Jawn

It’s that time of year again. Happy Cinco de Mayo to everyone. Cinco de Mayo is often thought of as Mexico’s Independence Day, but in fact, it’s really more celebrated in the U.S. and regionally in the Mexican state Puebla. May 5th actually is the date that the Mexican army defeated the French in Puebla back in 1862 and now has become a day to celebrate Mexican heritage, not independence. Make sure to get your Corona and Tequlia on heavy tonight and tell a Mexican you love their people.
