Hudson Mohawke previews two new Kanye tracks (Video)

Posted in Club, Hip Hop, Music News, Video on May 12, 2013 by New Jawn

Kanye West

If you’re like me, next Saturday isn’t soon enough to hear a taste of some new Kanye West material from his upcoming sixth studio release. G.O.O.D. Music signee Hudson Mohawke, half of TNGHT, premiered a couple tracks from Kanye’s next album during his set at Freeform Festival in Poland. Damn if they don’t sound like some bangers. I have to assume Kanye’s move to an EDM sound played a huge part in scooping up Mohawke as one of his signed producers. Shit sounds bananas. Sound quality not great, but you can feel that bass heavy Yeezy shit coming.

NJ Throwback – My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Word (MP3, Video)

In paying homage to MCR, here is my favorite of their tracks. Gerard Way and company announced today that My Chemical Romance has official called it a day. With a lack of interest in their most recent release of singles, I guess the time is right. I remember when they blew up from a couple videos on Fuse to the arena rockers they became with The Black Parade. They’ll be missed. My question is what is next for James Dewees now?

Tyler-The-Creator-Wolf-Album

Tyler is good with a joke and his choice for the album cover of his follow up to Goblin is a classic. Throwback elementary school style photo shoot for the OFWGKTA main man. Wolf drops on April 2nd. Check out the full tracklist with a guest spot from Dave Matthews. WTF?

John Nolan solo show at The Barbary tonight is canceled – NJNews

John Nolan 2013

John Nolan was getting back on his grind doing a short solo tour, performing acoustic versions of songs from Taking Back Sunday, Straylight Run, and his short-lived run at a solo career. Unfortunately, the singer-songwriter was in a car accident and has canceled his show scheduled for tonight at The Barbary. Very disappointing news. I was looking forward to hearing some of those classic tunes and most likely a cover or two. Whether it would have been a Brand New track or a Bieber cover, he usually works some sort of surprise in there. Like this Elliott Smith gem, for your viewing pleasure. Hope everything is okay, John.

Spitta is on his grind and releases his latest work New Jet City.  I only listened to 3 tracks with Jada, Juicy and Wiz/Ross and I already know I’ll be hooked on this for 2013, even T James got a guest spot.  I love this cover art of ol’ Nawlins #Jetlife.

The 6th Annual Roots Picnic lineup announced – NJNews

6th-roots-picnic-2013

Questlove took to Instagram to let his followers take a look at the official lineup for The 6th Annual Roots Picnic. It’s back to a one-day event and it pains me to say this, it’s super disappointing. The Roots Picnic has been good every year, blending genres with some big names and rising stars of hip hop, rock, and electronic music. I mean this year’s lineup is still attend worthy, but there’s no Wu-Tang or TV On The Radio. I guess Gary Clark Jr. and Premier will be the highlights, obviously along with The Roots Crew. I’m sure it’ll still be a blast down at the Festival Pier on June 1st. Check out last year’s recap video.

Kanye West & Kim Kardashian expecting first child – NJNews

Posted in Hip Hop, Music News with tags on December 31, 2012 by New Jawn

Kanye West & Kim Kardaschian

Kanye West didn’t make too big of a deal when he announced that he is expecting his first child with his celeb-girlfriend Kim Kardashian at his final show at Revel last night. Yeezy looked like he was trying his damnedest to contain the excitement when he reffered to Kim as his Baby Mama. No offense to Wiz and Amber, but their baby is gonna be one the best babies of all-time! Congratulations to them both. Fuck the haters.

Die Antwoord – Fatty Boom Boom (MP3, Video)

Posted in Club, Electronic, Hip Hop, MP3, Music News, Video with tags , , , on October 17, 2012 by New Jawn

Die Antwoord are out there, as we already know, but their latest music video is on some bizarre shit. The South African hip hop duo depict Lady Gaga, played by a transgender, visiting their native land in a full meat suit with a series of insane events occurring. The visuals have sparked a bit of a Twitter beef between the two with Gaga saying “I fink you freaky but you don’t have a hit”, followed by bragging about how many tickets she’s sold in South Africa. The video is a bit insulting I guess, but it’s all in good fun. I mean, how else are Die Antwoord going to make a name for themselves? Oh yea. And apparently it’s okay to dress up in blackface if you’re from South Africa… in case you were wondering. Check out the video for yourself.

BET Awards announce The Cypher lineup for 2012 – NJNews

Posted in Hip Hop, Music News, Television with tags , on September 29, 2012 by New Jawn

The highlight of the BET Awards has been The Cypher the past couple years. A few years back, the one with Lupe, Styles P, and Papoose was fire. And last year, the Shady Records crew killed it. The 2012 ceremony is taking place on October 9th and will be hosted by jokeman Mike Epps. The Cypher lineup has a few already set “teams”, but the other MC’s will be paired up. They better put A$AP and RZA on the same jawn. You know Kosha Dillz will be with RZA no doubt. Check out the selected artists for 2012′s Cyphers.

  • West Coast Cypher: Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, YG, Kurupt, DJ Quik, Xzibit and E-40
  • Ruff Ryders Cypher: DMX, Eve, Cassidy and Murda Mook
  • Grand Hustle Cypher: T.I., B.O.B., Trae Tha Truth, Iggy Azalea and Chip
  • Everyone else: A$AP Rocky, Mystikal, Talib Kweli, Boy Jones, Brianna Perry, Childish Gambino, Lil Chuckee, The Kid Daytona, Driicky Graham, Hopsin, Joey Bada$$, K’La, Kosha Dills, Mac Miller, RZA, ScHoolboy Q, Tito Lopez, Angel Haze, and Ab-Soul.

Jay-Z opens the Barclays Center (Video)

Posted in Concerts, Hip Hop, Music News with tags , on September 29, 2012 by New Jawn

Last night Jay-Z performed the first show at the new Brooklyn arena, the Barclays Center. Check out a well put together video documenting the big night, including a new freestyle after he talks about the journey to getting Barclays opened. He balls so hard, he don’t respect the referees. Well done, Hov.

Cruel Summer artwork & tracklist revealed – NJNews

Posted in Art, Hip Hop, Music News on September 7, 2012 by New Jawn

This is definitely the most anticipated hip hop album coming in the near future. Kanye has put together a solid team and of course he gets some of the best in the game to contribute to his G.O.O.D. Music label’s first compilation. I’m surprised there are only 12 tracks, but you know Yeezy always makes each one count. Expect every one of these to be bangers. Why is it that Cruel Summer is coming out after August? Kanye dictates seasons now too. He’s a f#%?ing pimp.

Forbes announce the hip hop “Cash Kings” list – NJNews

Posted in Hip Hop, Music News, World News with tags , , , on September 5, 2012 by New Jawn

Forbes Magazine always keeps an eye on who is makin’ all the loot. They release a list each year of the top earners in hip hop, amongst other categories, and let you see just how much these fuckers are bringing home. I guess Dr. Dre was smart to get into the headphone game, because even without having any albums in stores, he tops the list by doubling over the number two spot, Diddy. How is Rozay all the way down at 12? He’s the hardest working man in hip hop. I guess it’s time to rethink the whole “free music” thing. Check out the full list. No real surprises on here except that Mac Miller is getting money. Who’s listening? Hit the read more section for the full Top 20 list.

Made In America Festival schedule announced – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Music News, Philly with tags , , , , on August 30, 2012 by New Jawn

The full schedule for this weekend came out last night and it’s only got a couple disappointments in terms of how it was put together. While I’m kinda bitter that Jay-Z is only going to do a 90 minute set, even though this is supposedly all his doing, I can’t believe that Pearl Jam will stick with their plan to only play 2 hours on Sunday. Hopefully Hov does the same. Calvin Harris being at the same time as Miike Snow causes some troubles for me, but my biggest issue is the fact that The Hives, one of the “best live bands in the world” by many concert-goer’s standards, are limited to not only a 45 minute set, but also the first act to kick off Day 2. That’s super lame. Can’t say it’s made me any less psyched about Made In America, but I do believe that the organizers blew a chance to have a great performance mid-day on Sunday with the Swedes.

FireFly Music Festival announces return for 2013 – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Music News, Philly, Updates with tags , , , , on July 24, 2012 by New Jawn

Just a couple of days after the completion of the inaugural festivities, the FireFly Music Festival has already confirmed that this wasn’t a one time thing. FireFly will return in 2013 and are completing an “early-bird” presale for next year, starting tomorrow. Obviously, there are no confirmed acts, but regardless, it’s time to start making a plan. Considering the lineup they put together for this first year, I am sure it will be another amazing selection of acts for 2013. The festival was put together successfully both in terms of bands and the space utilized. The Dover Downs is going to, once again, be the place to be next July. Great news!

UPDATE: FireFly is confirmed for June 21st – 23rd, 2013 at the same location in Dover, Delaware. Lineup and more info to follow. Early-bird, advanced tickets went on sale today for the 3-day passes.

Ben Gibbard announces solo album, Former Lives – NJNews

Posted in Acoustic, Alternative, Music News with tags , on July 17, 2012 by New Jawn

I figured it would only be a matter of time before Death Cab For Cutie’s frontman Ben Gibbard would get around to releasing a solo album. He’s done plenty of solo acoustic and piano appearances throughout his career and serves as the songwriter for the band. It was just a matter of time before he either wanted to make something completely different in style or wrote something so personal that it wasn’t meant for the band to release. Since The Postal Service was the first of those options, Former Lives will likely be the latter. After his recent divorce from wifey Zooey Deschanel, everyone expected some heartbroken jams from Gibbard. I would be willing to guess that his solo release will touch on those themes. Former Lives will be released on October 16th. A solo tour will follow, which I’ve had the pleasure of catching before from Gibbard and it was amazing. Very exciting news.

Young Buck sentenced to 3 years in prison – NJNews

Posted in Hip Hop, Music News, New Jawn Exclusive, Video on July 14, 2012 by New Jawn

Gangsta rappers usually go to prison in 3′s so who will be next?  Beans, Buck and……my guess is Lil Webbie or some other HR bull.

Beanie Sigel sentenced to 2 years in prison – NJNews

Posted in Hip Hop, Music News, Philly with tags , , on July 13, 2012 by New Jawn

Damn Beans! Beanie Sigel has been sentenced to two years behind bars for his failure to file taxes. Reports say he didn’t claim $720,000. It’s been a minute since Sigel was in that tax bracket I’m sure, so getting time now just seems like a major blow. Beans is supposed to have a collaboration album coming out with Scarface. Hopefully they finish that before he reports to the clink on September 12th. Beans is the realest nigga in the game. He speaks The Truth.

Fun Fun Fun Fest announces 2012 lineup – NJNews

Austin, TX knows how to do music festivals and this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest looks like another goodie. I feel like the Black Stage was made specifically to make me wish I was going to be in Texas from November 2nd – 4th. Refused. Turbonegro. Fucked Up. Wavves. I would be a pig in shit. The reunion of Run DMC is getting a lot of attention, but the real treat at that stage will be Girl Talk and A$AP Rocky. Even the comedy stage is thorough this year with David Cross, Eugene Mirman, and Doug Benson. Other notable performers: Paul Banks, Explosions In The Sky, Santigold, A Place To Bury Strangers, Bun B, De La Soul, Danny Brown, Rakim, Tanlines, Titus Andronicus, and Brendan Benson. FFF knows diversity.

Four stabbed at Swedish House Mafia show in Dublin – NJNews

Posted in Electronic, Music News, World News with tags , on July 9, 2012 by New Jawn

Reports of four attendees stabbed and five others injured are circling the Swedish House Mafia and their Saturday night performance this weekend in Dublin. The promoters for the Phoenix Park show assure the media that all concert-goers were searched as usual upon entry, but it appears a 23-year-old man managed to bring a knife into the show. This also comes with reports that another person died of an overdose at the same SMH show. All this just a week after the Swedish production trio announced they will no longer be touring or performing live. It looks like some fans are taking the news pretty poorly. While the injuries were serious, all of those injured are recovering and the man responsible is in police custody.
