FireFly Music Festival announces return for 2013 – NJNews

Posted in Concerts, Music News, Philly, Updates with tags , , , , on July 24, 2012 by New Jawn

Just a couple of days after the completion of the inaugural festivities, the FireFly Music Festival has already confirmed that this wasn’t a one time thing. FireFly will return in 2013 and are completing an “early-bird” presale for next year, starting tomorrow. Obviously, there are no confirmed acts, but regardless, it’s time to start making a plan. Considering the lineup they put together for this first year, I am sure it will be another amazing selection of acts for 2013. The festival was put together successfully both in terms of bands and the space utilized. The Dover Downs is going to, once again, be the place to be next July. Great news!

UPDATE: FireFly is confirmed for June 21st – 23rd, 2013 at the same location in Dover, Delaware. Lineup and more info to follow. Early-bird, advanced tickets went on sale today for the 3-day passes.

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #1. Jack White

Posted in Concerts, Philly, Rock & Roll with tags , on July 19, 2012 by New Jawn

Well, it’s finally here tomorrow. The FireFly Music Festival kicks off tomorrow in the early afternoon in Dover, DE. The most anticipated act is also the closer for the first day, Jack White. It’s been years since I’ve got to catch Jack White live, probably because he seems to have a disdain for Philly based on the fact he’s skipped over us with all recent tours for The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather. I knew I’d eventually track him down and can’t be more excited about this type of show. Jack is playing not only songs from his debut solo album Blunderbuss, but also tracks from his former bands previously mentioned. Friday is just kicking things off and it has one of the best rock musicians of our generation closing shop. Finally, a nearby festival that delivers. Thanks FireFly.

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #2. Modest Mouse

Posted in Alternative, Concerts, Philly with tags , on July 18, 2012 by New Jawn

Modest Mouse were another late addition to FireFly. I thought that would sell Paz on going to this shindig, but previous engagements fucked that up. They’ll be on early-evening Saturday. I bet if the promoters knew that Passion Pit were going to back out, they’d have Modest Mouse going right before The Killers. Now I guess everyone will have to watch Lupe Fiasco after these guys, which just seems insulting. Not that Lupe’s terrible but considering these guys are pioneers in the indie rock scene, they should be a co-headliner at FireFly. If they don’t play “Beach Side Property” or “Trailer Trash”, I’m gonna be one disappointed sour-puss. You don’t want that, Brock.

MODEST MOUSE – THE WORLD AT LARGE

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #3. Girl Talk

Posted in Concerts, Electronic, Mash-Up, Philly with tags , on July 17, 2012 by New Jawn

Girl Talk is on at the same time as Flaming Lips, which is lame but with that being the only scheduling conflict now that Passion Pit backed out of Firefly, I can’t get too upset. I will certainly be watching Girl Talk’s wild-ass set. Sure, his music is just mashing up famous songs, but he does it extremely well, goes apeshit up on stage, and the audience eats that shit up. The music and the drugs will make Sunday night the wildest night this weekend. Good luck following this guy, Black Keys.

GIRL TALK – LET IT OUT

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #4. Silversun Pickups

Posted in Alternative, Concerts, Indie, Philly with tags , on July 16, 2012 by New Jawn

Silversun Pickups got added late to the Firefly lineup and I couldn’t be happier. With their third solid album recently released, they’ll probably be setting out on a headlining tour this fall, but their addition to Friday makes it possibly the best day for rock fans. It’s pretty awesome that non-headlining bands like SP and Death Cab will still play 90 minute sets.  I didn’t know Chad from Neptunes was their drummer.

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #5. The Killers

Posted in Alternative, Concerts, Philly, Uncategorized with tags , on July 15, 2012 by New Jawn

The Killers are the type of band that should only play festivals. They will be a great finish to Saturday, which is packed with great acts all day long. I’ve never got to experience The Killers live, but from the footage I have seen, they put on a great show and sound perfect. I am sure the crowd will be into this one and singing along to all of their hits, which for a band that hasn’t been around too long, they have plenty of. I feel bad posting a cover track, but honestly, their version of “Shadowplay” is phenomenal. There was plenty to pick from, but this is at the titts. FireFly in just five days…

THE KILLERS – SHADOWPLAY

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #6. Death Cab For Cutie

Posted in Alternative, Concerts, Philly with tags , on July 14, 2012 by New Jawn

Death Cab For Cutie would be at the top of this list if I hadn’t seen them live before. That’s not a dig. They’re amazing live. I just mean I’ve been there, done that. They don’t strike me really as a festival band, so it makes sense that they didn’t get a headlining spot for FireFly. They will deliver a great 90 minute set on Sunday evening. It will be the calm before the storm. The storm that brings cousin Molly to Dover…

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – TRANSATLANTICISM

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #7. Cults

Posted in Concerts, Indie, Philly with tags , on July 13, 2012 by New Jawn

Another great set to catch on Saturday at FireFly. Cults music has dayloading written all over it, and with their show being follow by GroupLove and Young The Giant, it’s going to be a fun day indeed. With only one album under their belt, you pretty much know what to expect from the NY duo’s early set. Hopefully they will unveil a new track or two. Maybe even include that Leonard Cohen cover they did when visiting Philly last winter. Here’s my favorite tune off their self-titled debut.

CULTS – OH MY GOD

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #8. Cold War Kids

Posted in Alternative, Concerts, Philly with tags , on July 12, 2012 by New Jawn

If FireFly didn’t have such a thorough lineup, Cold War Kids would be much higher on this list. I only caught the tail-end of their set years back when they opened up for Muse when they were promoting Robbers And Cowards. Since, they’ve had a couple of albums and EP’s, none of which have been nearly as exciting as their debut, but they still manage to include a couple infectious tracks on each release. There’s no reason their set shouldn’t include just the gems then. If they don’t perform “Something Is Not Right With Me”, “Audience Of One”, or “Louder Than Ever”, I’m gonna be heated. Of course, they’ll close with the track that started it all though.

COLD WAR KIDS – HANG ME UP TO DRY

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #9. GroupLove

Posted in Alternative, Concerts, Philly with tags , on July 11, 2012 by New Jawn

I almost dismissed GroupLove all together when I first heard their lead single “Tongue Tied” but it did start to grow on me eventually. Then I was told by someone who’s music taste is semi-relevant to check out their debut album and I was sold. The album opener, “Itchin’ On A Photograph”, is an undeniable gem and there are a few others sprinkled in Never Trust A Happy Song that are worthwhile. I’ve heard great things about their live show and look forward to catching them Saturday afternoon at FireFly. With all the energy this band has, they seem like a perfect midday performance to catch next weekend.

GROUPLOVE – ITCHIN ON A PHOTOGRAPH

FIREFLY COUNTDOWN – #10. The Black Keys

Posted in Concerts, Philly, Rock & Roll with tags , on July 10, 2012 by New Jawn

With just 10 days til the FireFly Music Festival, I’ve already thumbed thru the schedule and planned my agenda for the 3-day event in Dover. It kicks off next Friday and has plenty of acts that I am psyched to catch. Figured might as well make note of the top 10 performers I am looking forward to seeing. The Black Keys might be much higher on some others’ lists, but with them closing the entire festival, I find it kind of disappointing. Jack White and The Killers close the other nights, but save The Keys for the finale? Doesn’t seem correct to me. Regardless, I’ve seen these guys live before and they’re going to kill it I’m sure. Hopefully it’s a good mixture of old and new tunes. Here’s a classic.

THE BLACK KEYS – STRANGE TIMES
